Understanding Throughput

Throughput, very simply, is a measure of how many units a system can process in a given amount of time. In data transmission terms, the throughput is a measure of the amount of time between a single interactive user request and the the receipt of the response. In other words, when accessing the internet, network throughput is the amount of data moved successfully from one place to another (i.e. from a website to the user’s device) in a given time. This is typically measured in megabits per second (Mbps).

It is for this reason that throughput is the most important measure when considering broadband speeds, and it is of course rural areas that typically struggle in this domain.

Poor quality internet connections are unacceptable for the modern business and indeed household, no matter where they are located. Access to the internet is simply an everyday part of life – it’s no longer an option or even a luxury for the enterprise or individual, but an imperative.

However, cable broadband – the ‘standard’ solution, if you like – is generally limited or even completely unavailable in rural areas. Often the alternative solution is to deliver broadband via ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line), which essentially means that the broadband will arrive via a telephone line. But again, these speeds are often slow, and other satellite and fixed broadband solutions can be prohibitively expensive.

How Does WiBE Multi-Beam Antenna Technology Work?

WiBE multi-beam antenna technology works by extending the range and throughput of a 3G mobile network. This allows the 3G network to be a viable option for fast internet access.

The WiBE scans using a patented multi-beam antenna system and selects the link offering the best data connection. It continues to monitor the 3G network automatically to ensure that the best available link is maintained.

To put it another way, the multi-beam antennas monitor all available transmitter stations, and uses the signal from the one that provides the greatest throughput. It should be noted, however, that “greatest throughput” does not always equate to “strongest signal”. It is for this reason that multi-beam antennas are the better choice than the dongle. Indeed, in tests, throughput has been shown to be up to 2.5 times better than a dongle in the same location.
